Iwanami means "Waves Breaking Against Rocks." The practioner begins in tatehiza, facing 90 degrees right. An attack is initated from the left. Nukitsuke begins as the iaidoka rises; the left fingertips guide the mine (back of the blade) for the last quarter of the draw. As the draw is finished, the iaidoka is standing. Shuffle forward, reinforced thrust, slash to remove the blade, kirioroshi, chiburi, noutou.
