A summary of Science, May 2008.
You can find all the Science summaries in web format at:

Unlike the JCBFM journal club, ONLY RELEVANT ARTICLES are listed. My relevance assessment is entirely implicit and is designated with regard to work we are doing or contemplating RIGHT NOW.
In May 2008, I found only two articles of interest:
-------------------------------------------------------
*1. Regulated Protein Denitrosylation by Cytosolic and Mitochondrial Thioredoxins. 23 May.
Moran Benhar, et al.
S-nitrosylation (SNO) of proteins by NO donors can be reversed by the well-characterized thioredoxin system. This system is quite similar to the glutamate system, in that it requires reduced sulfhydryl groups to engage in antioxidant activity. Moreover, it has been known that a certain amount of caspase-3 is S-nitrosylated and therfore inactivated. What the authors have now shown is that the thioredoxin system may be the heretofore-unidentified player in the Fas-mediated denitrosylation (and reactivation) of caspase 3.

*2. "Just Give Them Grants." 16 May. Leshner, AI.
Boy, if that title just doesn't jump out at you, then I don't know. Short, fascinating editorial with some important stats on NIH grants. Don't hold your breath.
Relevance: HIGH.
