Captain Gaia! The Shield Generators Are Reversing Polarity!

Space is not friendly to the Earth. Every day, we are bombarded by countless charged particles streaming from the sun and the rest of the cosmos, a rain of cosmic bullets travelling at hundreds of kilometers per second. No, I’m not talking about the ultraviolet energy that is mostly neutralized in the Holey Ozone Layer. This is a different kind of bombardment. This barrage of charged particles should have deleterious effects for life on Earth. As the high-energy protons, electrons and atomic nuclei slam into the upper atmosphere, they should generate secondary X-rays to rain down onto the surface. These X-rays should in turn slowly ionize the proteins and nucleic acids in our tissues. What’s more, solar winds and cosmic rays should increase the temperature in the upper atmosphere, causing it to boil away over geologic time.

Yet life thrives on Earth—and that’s because of the way the Earth is built.
