Now it’s time to see how genes get expressed—that is, how they actually do stuff for the Quantum Meat. Let’s say you’re (a) a developing fetus or (b) a crooked Senator from Michigan. Either way, you need to make new proteins at certain times, or things will go badly for you. If you’re a fetus, and you don’t make a critical protein at the right point in your development, you could end up with serious birth defects. If you’re a Senator, and you stop making certain brain proteins, your cognitive function could suffer, and you’ll decide that what America really needs is a Flag Burning Ammendment. Either way, the inability to produce a particular protein—to express a gene---results in a derangement of biological function.
